It’s Over – Reflecting on the Journey to My First Two Bikini Competitions

Its over…..

A sixteen week weight loss journey of dieting and training and extreme focus have come to an end. Sixteen weeks of nerves, laughs, second guessing myself and growing have written their final chapter.

A sixteen week adventure that begun with a silly idea have ended in two spectacular shows.

It took sixteen weeks to become the Melissa that has always been hiding inside – to become the woman that those close to me have known was inside, but I had yet to believe existed.

A sixteen week adventure ended with TWO spectacular shows, TONS of memories, TONS of amazing new friends, and a ZILLION new ideas and adventures and opportunities to pursue.

Why?

I decided to compete initially because I have always wanted ‘that look’ – the look of the women on the cover of the Oxygen magazines. The one with the muscles and the flat stomach. To me ‘that woman’ was the epitome of sexy and fitness success. Like we have all done – I’ve dieted and trained before but never with the seriousness that would be required to reach that level. I knew that the only way for me to ‘really’ get to that point was to have an ultimate goal that would require me to get to that point – so I decided why not do something COMPLETELY out of character for me and test myself in SO many ways – and so my journey to my first bikini competition began.

The Journey….

It was by no means easy.

Waking up at 4:30 or 5 am to get to the gym before work – weights, cardio, posing – then off to work. If I didn’t finish everything in the morning – I’d head back to the gym after work to make sure that I did everything I needed to do to get ‘that look’.

Cooking and planning my meals for the week – making sure that I was not only eating the right food but that I was eating enough. Counting macronutrients – proteins, fats and carbs. Writing down what I ate – which was probably the most helpful in ensuring I stayed on track – seeing how I changed and monitoring how I felt.

There were days when I stepped on that scale watching the numbers drop getting so excited to see that my hard work was paying off. Then there were days when the scale didn’t budge or went the wrong direction and it felt like my whole world fell apart.

Learning how to walk in 5 inch heels. Hahaha. Oh goodness – ask my posing coach – I was the bonafide ‘jock in heels’ – without a clue as to how to walk in those things – it hurt and I was the furthest thing from sexy. But I was determined to not make a fool of myself on that stage and made sure I practiced everyday.

But I made it to the stage…
