10 Ways to Get a Better Night’s Sleep

Sleep is probably one of the most important things your body needs in order to help you lose weight and stay healthy. These 10 tips will help you get a better night’s sleep.

Not only does a lack of a good night’s sleep make you feel groggy and hard to focus the next day, but it also dramatically weakens your immune system increasing your chances of getting sick. Not to mention a lack of sleep can also foil your weight loss plans. On top of that if you are not getting enough sleep your body is unable to produce melatonin which decreases your ability to fight cancer.

A poor nights sleep can also increase the risk of stress-related illnesses such as heart disease, constipation, and various mood disorders.

As you can tell a good night’s sleep is imperative to staying healthy and performing your best day in and day out. Lucky for you there are some measures you can take to help ensure you can perform your best everyday.

How to Get a Better Night’s Sleep

1. Sleep in COMPLETE Darkness – Even the tiniest bit of light can disrupt your sleep patterns – disrupting the pineal glands production of melatonin – increasing your risk of cancer. Make sure that you cover all alarm clocks, windows, and close the door. Having minimal to no light in your bedroom will help you get a better night’s rest as your body knows that its time for rest vs. action (as suggested by darkness).

2. Keep Your Bed For Sleeping Only – If you are doing work in bed or watching TV in bed – it may make it harder for you to relax and fall asleep.

3. Go to Bed as Early As Possible — Your body does most of its recharging for the next day between 11 pm and 1 am. If you are awake during these hours it is harder for your body to properly recover for the next day. The earlier you go to bed better you will feel in the morning.

4. Stop Working at Least 1 Hour Before Bedtime — We all have so much to do and are constantly running around trying to get everything done – often working right up until we go to bed. Putting your work away at least an hour or two before you go to sleep will help your mind to relax and make it easier for you to fall alseep.

5. Avoid Caffeine or Alcohol — Caffeine will keep you awake for hours while alcohol may help you fall asleep initially it will have you up in a few hours unable to fall asleep. Avoiding both of these substances will help you fall asleep faster and get a better night’s sleep.

    I have heard from so many people that sleep is important. Thank you for the information. I am trying to break the habit of watching TV in Bed but it sure is hard. I guess I should just remove the TV from the bedroom.

    thanks for tips but i need to read to go to sleep and then invariably doze off iwth the light on
    i bought a day light for SAD 4 years ago and that does help when i, feeling down
